According to the Google’s official Mobile blog this new version will improve the overall performance including but not meant to speed improvement, smoother scrolling, and no freezing.

With this new version users now have ability to use shortcut keys, Simple hit ‘z’ to undo, ‘k’ to go to a newer conversation, and ‘j’ to go to an older conversation.

Users can now Manage multiple accounts, multiple mobile email drafts facility is there, Basic offline support is also available where you can compose and read your most recent emails even when there is no signal. Also, any outgoing messages will be saved in outbox of your phone and sent automatically when you’re back in coverage.
